FIRE LABORATORY OF COIMBRA UNIVERSITY (FIRELAB-UC)
Coimbra, Portugal

SITE
The plot is situated on a steep slope on the Campus Pólo II, masterplan of Coimbra’s University, next to the building IteCons.

BRIEF
The client provided us with a sketch design for a Fire Laboratory of Coimbra’s University with a lineup of implementation on the plot and interior organization. The building implementation is defined by two buildings with different functions: a Test Lab building and an Administrative building. The Test Lab building, where tests with different materials will be done, is situated on the lower part of the plot. The Administrative building has a public access on a higher level of the plot and stores all lecture rooms, offices and small laboratories.

PROPOSAL
It was decided to accept and make use of the differences between this two building parts, not just the programatic level cited above but also the level of materiality and presence on the surroundings: the Test Lab building has an industrial appearance with its almost blank façades coated with a corrugated sheet metal while the Administrative building has an institutional appearance characterized by its plastered/painted façades and horizontal windows and their canopies on the south side. Common to these two buildings, a concrete wainscot solves the implementation on the plot in their different levels. The interior of the Test Lab Building is characterized by this concrete wainscot, columns and beams in concrete and metal sheet wall coatings. The interior of the Administrative building is characterized by a spatious hall with an open staircase that connects the three floors: Laboratory floor (basement) with access to the Trial room, Internal Services floor (1st floor) where the main entrance is and Educational floor (2nd floor) with access to an outside terrace.
