CAFETERIA BANCO POPULAR
Av. Ramalho Ortigão, Lisbon, Portugal
The headquarters of the Popular Bank consists of an office tower surrounded by a basement that resolves the difference of heights between two streets and where the parking is located.
It is proposed to set this new place (extension) on top of this basement, on an outside terrace, protected from the busy street and close to the tower’s main entrance. It’s position is defined by the existing tower on the West side, the panoramic city view towards North, the presence of a fountain on the East side and by a slightly raised garden of Olive trees on the South side. This privileged surroundings and atmosphere will dictate its position and shape, as described in the following chapters.
A protected and qualified interior space, where employees can have their meals, enjoying the surroundings, and a small cafeteria space for private concession. At present, this place is very unpleasant to use due to the strong exposure to the North winds.
Given the surroundings above – Olive tree garden, a Fountain and a City Sightseeing the cafeteria is proposed to be as a “Garden Pavillion” that will be constituted essentially by three elements:
- A flat roof, a prominent element, “suspended” above the back continuous glass facade, which provides protection of direct sunlight, sheltering users of sun and rain conditions.
- A glass curtain works as the only continuous element that separates inside/outside spaces, allowing more transparency and visibility to the surroundings and offering privacy between inside and outside activities.
- A core that contains and centralizes all the technical areas and works as the main axis to structure space configuration. Around this core, we find the entrance areas, canopy and heating / dining areas where the cafeteria counter is located.
